Former Federal Bureau of Investigation Director James Comey Submits Not Guilty Plea to Accusations of Falsehoods Lawmakers

Former FBI head James the ex-FBI chief has entered an innocent plea to giving untrue testimony to US legislators and obstructing a lawmaking procedure.

Mr Comey's attorney entered the response representing him in a national courtroom in Alexandria, Virginia on mid-week.

Patrick Fitzgerald announced he would attempt to have the proceedings dismissed for various causes including that his the accused, a critic of President Donald Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.

Mr Comey was formally accused just days after Donald Trump pushed his attorney general to move forward against him.

Legal Proceedings

During the hearing on Wednesday, the defense counsel the legal representative advised the judge they aimed to file multiple legal requests to terminate the legal matter before a court case, claiming the government's case was retaliatory and that a government lawyer was wrongfully assigned to take over the case.

Mr Comey's case was first handled by a Virginia prosecutor, who left his position under scrutiny from the former president after his investigation into a different opponent - NY AG Letitia James - was unable to bring criminal charges.

Legal Setting

James Comey came across in optimistic frame of mind as he came into the court on Wednesday, speaking with his attorneys and sharing humor. He was supported by his wife, his wife and daughter Maureen, a federal prosecutor who the previous administration recently fired.

Following the reading to the court recite his rights and the pair of allegations against him in court on mid-week, Mr Comey was inquired if he understood the charges.

"Absolutely your honour. Appreciate it," he informed the court.

Historical Information

The former director was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2013-2017 and was terminated about four months into the former president's first administration as president. At the period, Mr Comey was directing an investigation into foreign election meddling and whether there were any connections between Russia and the presidential campaign.

While in office, the director caused a counter-response from the Democratic party when he announced just immediately preceding the national vote that he was examining presidential nominee the candidate's use of a non-governmental email account. Charges against Clinton were never brought, resulting in disapproval from Republicans as well.

Ongoing Accusations

The federal government allege James Comey lied to US lawmakers during a congressional hearing in recent years when he was being interrogated about both the previous examination as well as the election interference investigation. They say he misled the Senate by claiming he had not authorized someone at the agency to disclose to journalistic entities details about the FBI investigations.

Prosecutors also accuse the defendant of "corruptly endeavoring to sway, block and slow" the panel by making false statements to it.

Personal Comments

In a video Mr Comey shared to his Instagram after he was indicted, he declared he was wrongly accused and alleged the former president of behaving like a "tyrant".

"We have been aware for years that there are consequences to opposing Donald Trump," he stated. "We choose not to live on our knees."
"I'm innocent," he continued. "So let's have a legal proceeding."

The charges against Mr Comey came after Trump published on social media demanding his attorney general, the attorney general, charge the former director and additional individuals.
